Also, I firmly agree that a high sales tax/low income tax is a great idea. Everyone pays their fair share, thus easing the tension between the lower and upper classes. I resent the fact that someone could work under the table and my husband's income covers their fair share. Imagine also, a country making money off of the tourists instead of gouging its citizens. That would be like imagining Toronto as a city which didnt tax people for garbage pickup and then add an extra fee for the bins or charging an additional land transfer tax on top of the already existing one.

Cities play such a key role in deciding elections and since historically the lower classes tend to live in the urban areas I'm certain that taxation will never change to benefit the middle/upper class. If every person had a vote which counted towards the final total (instead of their riding) things just might. How many ridings does Toronto have? Around 17. Hamilton, Oakville, Burlington and Milton combined have 4.

Btw, I love your use of x + y = z in an everyday life situation. Perfect example for the high school kids who don't want to learn math because they don't see the real life value.

Also, If you arent living in Toronto, where are you living now?

It's true, the tax laws here are quite confusing. Does the gov't not take tax off the worker's cheques who help in the processing of processed goods? Do they not tax the business that purchases said goods?

As stated above, "I didn’t write the (Canadian Income Tax) Act, and I can’t explain what they were thinking." I'm pretty sure I have an idea: make a confusing set of rules that are hard to follow and benefit from. They can offer as many tax breaks as they want but they bank on people not knowing how to use it.

You nearly made me snort my Friday evening alcoholic beverage out my nose with this one. I'm reading it quite a bit after the posting date, just snooping around to see what an old acquaintance is up to (that would be "Joey", as I knew him, although Sarah you sound lovely too).

You see, my current job title is "Manager, Fund Taxation" so your issue is near and dear to my heart. I've lost track of the number of times in the last week alone that I've said something along the lines of "I didn't write the (Canadian Income Tax) Act, and I can't explain what they were thinking. I can only tell you what the book says, and what it means to you." (admittedly, it's been a particularly bad week for this).

Thanks for the laugh. As I recall that always was a talent of yours.

Hahaha Anna, I checked with Joe, and this was a business lunch for *three* people. (I've never eaten there.) But, it's an easy mistake since this *is* Toronto, afterall! Just one more reason why we moved . . . :)
